Schedules and After-Hours Devices

When an ordering clinician (OC) or a clinical team (CT) are in their off-hours, another party needs to be contacted in the event of an Actionable Findings message. An OC or CT can be assigned a schedule that defines the hours and days of their off-hours. When a message is received during off-hours it is routed to a different notification device, referred to as the after-hours device.

How Schedules Work

Using a schedule requires that an OC or CT have at least two notification devices assigned: one that receives messages during working hours, and one to which messages are sent when the OC or CT is not available (an after-hours notification device). When an Actionable Findings message comes into the system, PowerConnect Actionable Findings checks to see if the recipient has an after-hours device (which, by design, must have a schedule assigned to it). If an after-hours device is found, the system analyzes the device’s schedule and determines whether to send the message to the working hours notification device or to the after-hours notification device.

A schedule is made up of one or more shifts. Each shift represents a start and end day and a start and end time.

TIP!: Think of each shift as a block of time during which you want to have Actionable Findings notifications sent to the OC/CT’s working-hours notification device. Create as many shifts as necessary to complete a schedule.

Out-Patient Example Schedule

An OC would like alerts sent to a personal device during office hours and sent to an answering service during non-office hours. A possible schedule is shown below.

In-Patient Example Schedule

A hospitalist or resident group would like alerts sent to two daytime devices and one overnight device at specified times. A possible schedule is shown below.

NOTE: Create a separate shift for each day in a schedule. This gives you the flexibility of creating a different block of hours for each work day. For a provider who works only Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, create separate shifts for each of those three days. For example: Monday 08:00 to 20:00; Wednesday 08:00 to 18:00; Friday 08:00 to 18:00.
